Great question! Nearly all girls will experience a late period at least once so this is a very common question.
Our menstrual cycle is driven by hormones that tell our body what to do like to ovulate or to start your period. Since our menstrual cycle is regulated automatically by our bodies, this process is virtually invisible to us. To make things harder, our uterus and vagina are inside our bodies so when it comes to questions like what’s happening with my period – sometimes it is a guessing game!
Thankfully, we have clues that can give us a better idea of what’s happening inside our bodies like why your period could be late.
You’ve listed several reasons why your period could be late and since you have ruled out pregnancy and physical stress, you may want to consider mental stress as a possible reason why your period is late.
Like physical stress, mental stress can delay your period as well. When your body detects that you are going through a period of stress, your body thinks that you are not well enough to bear a child and become pregnant. So to protect you, your body can delay ovulation until a later time when you are more healthy and less stressed out. This later time can be weeks or months later or even 3 days later.
Mental stress can include emotional stress or other mental stress like when you are stressed out about exams.
There could be many reasons as to why your period was late and this is just one possible reason.
It’s hard to say whether your late period will affect how heavy your period is. There is no general guideline or rule that saids your period will be heavier or lighter if it is late.
I hope that helps Lexi! Good job keeping track of your period!
