This compact Tampax tampon has been reinvented with the original Tampax Pearl tampon, a brand spankin’ new applicator, and packaging!

I believe these have replaced the Tampax Compak tampons and it seems to have upset a lot of Tampax Compak fans so I had to see what the fuss was all about.

Absorbency

Unlike the original Tampax Pearl Compak tampons that expanded mostly length wise, the new Tampax Pocket Pearl tampons are just like the original full size applicator Tampax Pearl tampons.

The tampon expands mostly width wise into that wing shape so it does leave gaps in the directions the tampon doesn’t expand which for some girls may translate into leaks.

When I change my tampon, it is almost always evenly saturated which is a good sign that it has great absorbency.

The signature BackUp Braide is supposed to stop leaks before they happen but from my experience using the Tampax tampons, I’m not really 100% sure that it helps.

I mean it does absorb a little bit more on the braided part but sometimes I think it’s just absorbing more at the tail end and I’m not sure if it’s really stopping any leaks. The BackUp Braid just doesn’t make a noticeable difference to me.

Comfort
There was only one or two times where I leaked and the tampon wasn’t evenly saturated yet. I think the Leakguard braid is really a hit or a miss depending on your flow and how the tampon fits your body.

I would definitely recommend wearing a panty liner with this tampon.

Recommend for: Normal flows
Not recommend for: Lighter flows, always use the lightest absorbency needed for your flow.

Applicator
The new reinvented applicator looks like a copy cat of the U By Kotex Click tampons! They fully extend with the sound of a click and middle part is clear. (I always feel so guilty throwing away these fancy applicators LOL.)

Unlike the Tampax Pearl full size applicators that are a little flat in shape, these applicators are circular. If you’re using the twist and insert method, it will glide in smoothly without feeling the shape of the applicator.

A lot of girls experienced problems with the new applicator – that it would not click to fully extend or just too short to insert it high enough. I didn’t experience any of these problems though.

Packaging

I hate to be a huge packaging fanatic but I have to say that Procter and Gamble is one of the few companies that puts effort into the packaging of their feminine hygiene products! And not just Tampax but Always too! This is a product women need to buy every month and for some women, it may not be something they look forward to. So I think it’s great that they put as much effort into their packaging as they do their product.

The colorful and uniquely shaped box is what caught my eye first. I love how the box top closes too. It’s not like the regular box top flaps that almost never work (you know that type you see on cereal boxes?).

The tampon is packaged in bright fun colors and has a perforated opening but sometimes I found it hard to open the wrapper which can be frustrating if you are in a rush.

Also many girls complained that the ink came off the wrapper and dyed their hands a bunch of colors. The wrapper is already bright so with your hands colored brightly too, it is really hard to be discreet. It didn’t happen to me so perhaps it was a bad batch.

  1. Had no problem inserting them but they leaked BAD! Soaked my pantiliner horribly. Was hoping not to spend more money on another type.

  2. Very disappointed with the new design..
I’ve never been so frustrated just trying to insert a tampon.
It is short applicator so only goes half way wasted alot more than I’ve actually used.
Much more leakage and that’s with the heavy super one’s.
Please please please… bring the old ones back or make further improvements, having used the product for over 25+ year’s never had any problems until the new so called improved version was replaced on the market.

  3. The new Tampax pearl compact are terrible. They LEAK really bad; the applicator often does not work, and they are hard, so painful and uncomfortable. What have you done to this product. Please bring back the old one that I had no problems with and used for so many years without any of the above issues. I will not be buying this product again. Big, big disappointment and frustrating. Now I am going to have to find a new brand. Ugh.

    • I know I’m pretty late on this, but I would recommend U by Kotex Click tampons. I have never had an issue with them leaking, and you use the applicator the same way as you would with the Tampax Pearl Compact. You just pull the plunger up until it clicks, and it’s ready to go! :)

  4. I’m having a nightmare with this tampon recently. The applicator does not lock properly making it very difficult to insert. I have wasted a huge number of tampons. Tampax what have you done to this product? They used to be great. This is the last box I’ll be buying. I might as well buy a non applicator tampon as the applicator with this one is pretty much useless!

  5. Absolutely WORST tampon in the world. Like we all have to say, the applicator stops halfway and is wasted every time! [Unless, of course, you keep clicking and unclicking the son of a bitch until it is fully inserted] U By Kotex whatever is by far my favorite. I will not ever go for the cheap brand again. Tampax Pocket Pearl is most definitely the cheap brand as far as getting the job done fast and cleanly!

    • AGREED 110%. These tampons are a complete waste of money. The last thing you want to be while on your period is frustrated and these tampons will definitely leave you really, really pissed off. I just bought them trying to save money. So far, 10 are gone from my pack but I’ve actually only used three and two of those three were super uncomfortable! Probably because I had to insert them really slow – that’s the only way I could get them without the handle losing it’s taut. These tampons should be taken off the shelf and TAMPAX should reimburse me! ;)

  6. I’m very happy to uncover this web site. I want to to thank you for your time for
this wonderful read!! I definitely appreciated every part of it
and I have you book marked to look at new stuff on your web site.

  7. I thought they be great because they re compact but I am actually very disappointed. The applicator doesnt push the tampon all the way out. Few times i just get like half way out. Wasted few of them because of that so the tampon would not stayed in. I have used their products for so many years but I definitely Do Not recommend this one.

  8. Worst Tampons ever ive always used the tampax pearls with no problems at all then this is what I bought and tried it hurts me and want always go in when I have it in im hurting never have I experienced this with the others before yall changed it!

  9. Bought these tampons for the first time today and I wish I would have seen the reviews first. Holy heck these are HORRIBLE!!! The applicator unclicks every single time I try to insert the tampon. The thing pinches the bajeezus out of me and then the tampon does not even deploy. It’s just stuck halfway inside the applicator! I wasted three of these stupid things trying to insert them. I’ve been using Tampax and other tampon products for 30+ years. This is a design flaw and it causes actual pain. I can’t believe these haven’t been recalled. Total FAIL of a product. I’m going to return this box to the retailer because the applicators are completely defective. Pull and click my @ss. It doesn’t work!

    • Hi Annie,

If it ‘unclicks’, try pulling the plunger out again until it clicks, THEN twist/turn the plunger, and try pushing to insert again. I find this usually helps.

  10. I also had problems with the applicator click collapsing during placement of the tampon and pinching. I’ve been using the compact tampons for decades and not had this issue. I will have to find a new brand!

    • Hi Squishy,

I find that it helps to re-extend the applicator (while it is still inside you), twist the plunger, then try to push the plunger again. Sometimes the applicator seems to unclick and I find twisting the plunger helps.

  11. This is seriously the worst tampon ever… I was already frustrated that my local drug store didn’t have my usual Tampax Pearl lites (due to my light flow) so I opted for something different and “more fun” (regular size- way too big for my flow). Well let me tell you, it was not fun trying to insert 3 different tampons 3 different times! Once, the tampon didn’t stay in when I pulled out the applicator. One time I opened the wrapper and the tampon went rolling out onto the floor, so that was another waste. The one I have in currently is not in all the way and I’m in so much pain! Also, my fingers were dyed multiple colors after trying to open the wrapper. Sometimes, compact is not the best option. I’d rather have a tampon that is longer and less descrete that I know will actually work.

  12. Worst tampon ever!!! The new click system doesn’t work at all!!! Every time you try to push it in the stupid thing unclicks. Very frustrating!! Had to come on and have a search to see if anyone else was having problems or if it was just me.
