  1. Hi Dedy!

I’m 17 and have been having my period for about three years. I still haven’t been able to bring myself to use a tampon yet and have been using pads the whole time. However, we have a holiday coming up and my period is right in the middle of it, so I’d really like to learn how to use a tampon properly.

But I don’t have a problem with the application of it, that’s not what scares me (I read your guides and they’re really helpful!). The problem I’ve got is that I’m very sensitive down there. My boyfriend fingered me for the first time a few weeks ago and it hurt so much, more than I’d anticipated, it was probably one of the most painful things I’ve ever experienced. Whether that was because I wasn’t aroused enough or wasn’t relaxed enough or anything I don’t know. What I’m really worried about is if putting a tampon up there is going to feel the same way? If so, how do I get over this?! Also, is it normal to be that sensitive?

Thank you so much for your help
    Amelia xx

    • Hi Amelia,

If you’re worried about it not sliding in smoothly or any discomfort/pain, I suggest you wait until you have a heavy flow and lots of period blood (don’t wipe it away). Your period will act as a lubricant and help the tampon glide right in :). You’re right it can be very painful and uncomfortable when you are not “wet enough”. You will find that the period blood will make the tampon easier to insert even if you are not confident about feeling relaxed. <3 Good luck A!

      Your friend,
