Ellebox is a premium time of the month subscription box delivering organic cotton pads and tampons along with hand curated comfort and self care items to your door step.

This month’s Ellebox is my favourite one so far! The feature company is Chéri Arôme, a Canadian beauty company that makes all natural handmade beauty and skincare products.

I swear that the Ellebox team must be bigger skincare junkies than I am because every month they are delivering best natural skincare products that are made with scientifically proven ingredients that are excellent for your skin.

Ellebox Review

Chéri Arôme – Glow Face Lotion with Sea buckthorn, Rosehip, and Tsubaki oil

Made from premium ingredients, this lotion is antioxidant rich with intensive moisturizing benefits and dries to a beautiful velvety finish. Let’s take a closer look at the active ingredients:

Sea buckthorn oil is a berry extract with healing an rejuvenating effects on the skin making it an excellent lotion for the summer months when our skin really takes a hit from the UV rays.

Rosehip oil is a plant-based oil and a rich source of antioxidants and skin-beneficial fatty acids that are known to correct dark spots and hydrate dry, itchy skin, all while reducing scars and fine lines.

Tsubaki oil also known as camellia oil offers potent hydration and anti-aging benefits that has long been popular among Japanese women. It has high amounts of omega 9 fatty acid, as well as vitamins A, B, D and E.

Chéri Arôme – Pink Clay Body Polish

Looking at this polish I was thinking that this is likely a sugar scrub or a salt scrub but the ingredients didn’t list sugar or salt and I was really curious. Since this is an all natural product, I decided to taste it… It’s a sugar scrub :)!

Made from premium sun dried pink clay from Australia, this body polish provides hydration to the skin while helping improve skin texture and fine lines.

Begin with wet skin in the shower—warm-to-hot water is ideal to soften the skin. Allow the shower to run for 5-10 minutes and let the warm water soften the skin and prepare for exfoliation. Pause the running water while you exfoliate. Apply the cream and scrub in a circular motion. Rinse and tap dry with towel.

Chéri Arôme – Lip Tint Moisturizer in Rum Raisin

Super moisturizing and buttery smooth. Not greasy and surprisingly not waxy either. The colour looks dark in the tube but when worn it is actually quite flattering. It’s a nice berry colour and not too dark so I think this would be nice on all skin tones.

Smart Sweets – Seriously Sour Gummy Bears

No joke these are seriously sour!!! Sour candies are my weak spot and luckily for me, these are HEALTHY candies! Yes healthy and candy can be in the same sentence. Each bag packs a punch with 24 grams of fibre and has only 2 grams of sugar. Chocolate gets melty in the summer so it is so smart Ellebox decided to ship these guilt-free healthy sweets.

Natracare Pads & Organyc Tampons

Made from certified organic cotton, these pads are better for your health and the environment. Organic cotton menstrual hygiene products are great for those with sensitivity and is also what sets Ellebox apart from other time of the month subscription boxes.

Tea Sparrow – Quince Green Tea

When I first smelled this green tea, I was pleasantly surprised by how sweet it smelled and thought that this would be perfect with some honey to bring out the sweet aromas. This is actually one of Tea Sparrow’s top rated iced green teas!

A whole leaf sencha green tea that’s decorated with cornflower and mallow flower, and is flavored with quince fruit. Wonderfully refreshing!

Ellebox June Comfort Box

Ellebox is a period subscription box that delivers organic cotton pads and tampons and specially selected self-care items to your door step every month.

I was really happy with my first period subscription box from Ellebox so I was excited to discover what amazing goodies came in my June box. I’m subscribed to their Comfort Box which delivers organic pads, tampons, and self-care goodies every month right do my door step and more importantly, it arrives before my period does.

Pink House Natural Solutions products are this month’s feature company. I got a Fresh Louelza Face Wash ($24.00 value) and a Lemongrass Lime XX Pit Potion ($14.00 value). All their products are handmade from healthy, all natural, and organic ingredients (that also smell super yummy too!)

I received a delicious Walnut Green Tea by Tea Sparrow. It has a sweet nutty flavour and smells very rich and flavourful.

The Truffle Pig chocolates are my absolute favourite and my go to period chocolate. The piggy shapes are almost too cute to eat!! This chocolate is so rich that just one bite is enough to satisfy my chocolate cravings.

For my period supplies, I received Organyc tampons, Natracare pads, and a few panty liners which was a very nice surprise because they were not in my last delivery.

FLEX Menstrual Disc Review + Photos

flex menstrual disc

FLEX is a disposable, single use menstrual disc that collects your period rather than absorbing it.

The FLEX menstrual disc is worn inside the vaginal fornix which covers the cervix, and prevents menstrual fluid from entering the vaginal canal.

FLEX was so kind to send two boxes for me and a friend to review! Before we get into it, lets check out FLEX’s features and benefits:

FLEX features & benefits:

  • Wear up to 12 hours
  • Can be worn for mess-free period sex!
  • Not linked to TSS
  • Hypoallergenic, not made with natural rubber latex, BPA or phthalates
  • No chemicals, toxins, bleaching or shedding like tampons
  • Perfectly sized to fit most women
Packaging

flex menstrual disc
flex menstrual disc instructions

The packaging of FLEX is not like other period packaging I’ve seen – the design is clean and sexy. You would not have guessed from the packaging that FLEX is a period product. My co-worker thought it was some fancy chocolates!

FLEX is individually packaged in a discreet and thick black plastic. You can put it in your purse or pocket just in case you need one; that’s what I did. The pro of the plastic is the thickness and the opacity, so nobody could possibly tell what it really is.

Insertion
flex menstrual disc instructions
flex menstrual disc instructions

You definitely have to be comfortable with blood and placing your fingers inside. If you get squeamish about blood, this is not for you. You WILL get blood on your hands!

Follow these steps to insert FLEX:

  1. Pinch FLEX in half with your pointer finger and thumb
  2. Slide FLEX into your vaginal canal with your pointer finger and thumb until it’s in about half way and can let go without it falling out. This step is best done when you are sitting down.
  3. Using your middle finger, start pushing back and DOWN (not up) toward your cervix and vaginal fornix.
  4. Use your middle finger to tuck it behind your pubic bone. You know it’s secure once your finger touches somewhat of a hollow space after the pubic bone.
Larissa’s experience

The insertion was quite easy because I’ve had experience using a Nuva Ring and the insertion is similar. It only took me one try to get it in successfully. It took me about 30-45 seconds to get it in the first time and only 15-30 seconds the next time so it got easier with practice.

I feel like the best way to insert it is when you’re doing a high squat over the toilet. Once it’s in, you can sit back down to make sure it’s securely in place.

Dedy’s experience

The rim is very flexible and it keeps its shape for a few seconds when you squeeze it which gives you enough time to slide it into place comfortably. It didn’t bounce back to its circular shape right away which I’ve experienced with a similar product and can be quite uncomfortable.

I found it best to do the insertion when you have a bit of a flow so your period can act as a lubricant to help it glide in.

Wear

Larissa’s experience

I felt nothing during the entire 12 hours! Subconsciously, I thought I was leaking because I wasn’t sure if I inserted it properly the first few times. When I was urinating and having a bowel movement, I found that some of my period spilled out of the disc. According to the founders, this is normal. This happens because the pelvic floor is being pushed and pops the rim out of place. It should go right back into place when you stand up. Just wipe as usual and if needed, push the rim back in place with a clean hand.

I didn’t do any strenuous activities but I have 4 more discs so I will try this at the gym during my next period. I used them for 12 hours each for 4 days of flow.

Dedy’s experience

While I found the the insertion comfortable and easy, I couldn’t get mine to stay tucked behind my pubic bone. I felt it untuck when I went for a walk but thankfully I was wearing a pad too. I also tried FLEX when I was sleeping and had no problem but again I felt it shift out of place when I got up.

I think part of the reason is because I was very nervous and it made me tense up. When I was more calm, I noticed that I was able to push FLEX down farther.

My gynaecologist says that the FLEX should fit me because my vaginal fornix looks to be an average size. According to FLEX, typically a woman needs to use 7 discs to really nail it. But it’s just like riding a bike, once you get it you get it.

Unlike tampons, FLEX can be worn even when you don’t have a flow so I’m going to try again. I will post an update soon.

Removal
Larissa’s experience

I did the removal while I was already on the toilet. This made it easier as my FLEX had already popped out from behind my pubic bone. Since I did that, it was quite messy. I just made sure to be close to a sink or have wet wipes for my hands.

Dedy’s experience

Removal was very easy and comfortable. I inserted my index finger and felt for the rim of the menstrual disc. Then I untucked it from behind my pubic bone and pulled it out. It slid out effortlessly but it was a bit of a balancing act trying not to spill it. It’s best to do this part while sitting over the toilet or even in the shower.

The material of the rim is really flexible when it’s warm and moulds to your body’s shape really well. When I pulled it out, it flexed to a slim shape and didn’t bounce back to its circular form right away so it gave me time to slide it out comfortably.

Each month, Ellebox subscribers will receive Natracare pads and Organyc tampons along with chocolates, tea, and 2-3 natural and organic self-care treats specially selected with your health and wellness in mind.

So many major brands of pads and tampons contain chemicals which can be harmful to your body. That’s why all of ElleBox’s products are free from wood pulp, chlorine, bleach, dioxin, pesticides, synthetic fibre, crude oil, and rayon.

ElleBox invited me to review their popular Comfort Box and is offering The Period Blog’s readers an exclusive 30% OFF coupon code!

Ellebox Comfort Box Review

The first thing I noticed when I opened my ElleBox was that it smelled so good!! The natural aromas of the tea and the organic goodies smelled like a spa. So soothing and calming.

Ellebox goodies

My ElleBox was filled with all my period essentials and enough self-care goodies to spoil myself for the entire month.

Here’s what I got:

  • 10 Natracare pads
  • 10 Organyc tampons
  • Nourish Lip Butter by Om Organics
  • Hand + Foot Repair Cream by Om Organics
  • Tumeric Face Scrub by Scrub Supply Co
  • Tea by Tea Sparrow
  • A Truffle Pig Dark Hazelnut Chocolate Bar by Hagensborg Chocolate
  • Ellebox pads and tampons

    Ellebox Natracare pads

    Natracare pads
I’ve tried these before and they are perfect for ladies with sensitive skin. Natracare pads are made from 100% organic cotton and without harmful bleaches, dyes, or added scents. They’re also packaged in a quiet biodegradable paper wrapping – so perfect for public washrooms!

    Organyc tampons
100% organic cotton tampons with cardboard applicators. Unlike plastic applicators, these cardboard applicators are 100% biodegradable and great for our planet.

    Ellebox lip butter
Nourish Lip Butter by Om Organics
LOVE THIS!!! This lip butter smells like cacao and nourishes your lips with nature’s best ingredients like shea butter, cacao butter and argan oil. I’m a big skincare junkie and so impressed that this lip butter contains squalane which is more commonly found in high-end skin care. Squalane has powerful moisturizing properties and is an excellent source of antioxidants. I would definitely buy this again.

    Ellebox cream
Hand + Foot Repair Cream by Om Organics in Wild Plum, 59 grams
While plum is not my favorite fruit or scent, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this cream. It’s packed with nourishing ingredients for severely dry, cracked hands and feet. It’s not too heavy or thick and feels a little oily at first but it absorbs quickly. It’s like a tall drink of water for your skin.

    Ellebox face scrub

Tumeric Face Scrub by Scrub Supply Co
Scrub and mask 2 in 1. Vegan and all natural. Tumeric is a potent antioxidant with skin-soothing properties, can even skin tone and even fight acne – perfect for that time of the month. I’ve already used it two days in a row and my skin is glowing! Will definitely rebuy.

    Ellebox tea

Octet Tea Blend by Tea Sparrow
A caffeinated green and white tea blend with fruity notes of mango and lychee. I would consider this a light tea but I like my tea super bitter so take that with a grain of salt ;).

Truffle Pig Dark Hazelnut Chocolate Bar by Hagensborg Chocolate
Melt in your mouth chocolate shaped like cute little piggies! I can’t get enough of this chocolate. I only wish it came with 2 instead of 1… *hint hint ElleBox ;)*

I think the best part about ElleBox is that you get to discover high quality natural products proudly made by Canadian companies. The self-care goodies are the perfect size for pampering myself all month. I can’t wait to see what’s in my next month’s Comfort Box!

If you like any of the goodies that came with your box, you can rebuy them at ElleBox but sometimes you won’t find them because the favourites sell out very quickly.

ElleBox currently ships to the USA and Canada.

TOM Oxygen Releasing Pads Preview with Photos

Anti-Microbial, Anti-Odor, Anti-Humidity

TOM TO2M Pads
Recently the sister brother duo of TOM Pads (it stands for The Oxygen Movement) sent me some of their pads to try out. These pads are unlike any other pads on the market today.

TOM pads release oxygen making them super comfortable for women living in humid climates. The patented technology was created by Frank and Nancy Tsaur after Nancy complained about how the humidity affected her period.

So how does it work?
The TOM pad releases oxygen once your period comes in contact with the pad. Once activated, it can produce up to 50 mL of pure oxygen. And while I am not sure just how much oxygen that is, I’m going to assume it’s enough to keep you feeling less sweaty down there.

The oxygen also puts the breaks on odor-causing bacteria on your pad and on your skin.

Aside from being thin, flexible, and absorbent, TOM pads are also guaranteed to keep you more fresh and comfortable during that time of the month.

Initial Thoughts
TOM pads sent me 2 boxes – their regular pads and night time pads. They came packaged in a very cute cardboard box but I was disappointed to see each box only had 8-10 pads! Typically a box of pads is meant to last you one full period so they are sold in boxes of 16 pads or more. You would need to purchase at least 2 boxes for 1 period.

The night time pads are very long and have a wider back which is common for Asian pads and has recently become popular in North America. If these pads live up to their claims then I think these pads would be perfect for the hot summer nights when you have a heavy flow.

I’m planning to try these pads on my next period (it’s coming up very soon!). I can’t wait to share my review with all of you.

Little Things For Good: Tampon Tins with a side of LOL fun

“Why should the only solution be to hide the fact we carry tampons around?”

When we think of periods, it’s not normally something we look forward to every month with joy but we can’t deny that all girls have LOL period stories.

Enter Little Things for Good, a socially conscious company that makes LOL tampon tins that ‘tell it like it is’ featuring slogans on the front from real women about periods.

Little Things for Good was founded by Lizzie Earl after finding a lack of products to carry and organize tampons – but rather than creating a product which hid the fact it was to carry tampons, she wanted one that was loud and proud and challenged the taboo of periods in a fun and engaging way.

These little cases also do good like their name suggests – with 15% of the proceeds going towards charities St Mungo’s Broadway in the UK and Sunshine Action in Hong Kong to help provide homeless women with period products.

The tins have been been bought by people from around the world – everywhere from London England to Virginia USA, Hong Kong to New Zealand – and have been supported by magazines like Stylist and Cosmopolitan.

The tampon tins are priced at £10 and ship worldwide.

Playtex Sport Pads Review: My new favourite pad!

playtex sport pads

You’ve got game! Don’t let your period get in the way. Playtex® Sport® Ultra-Thin Pads with Wings are designed with an anti-leak absorbent core that pulls fluid quickly into the pad and locks it inside. PlayOn!

Playtex Sport Pad Review

When I heard that Playtex had recently released pads that were JUST like my all-time favorite Stayfree pads, I just had to try them!

The first thing I noticed when I opened the box was that there was… another one! The pads were packaged in more packaging – a sealed bag… wait so does this mean this pad is packaged 3 times?! (the box–>plastic bag–>individually wrapped). That’s a lot for such a small product!

Here’s another way to look at it: Now you can choose to store your pads in the bag or the box :) And it is much more convenient to throw a bag of pads in the my purse than a cardboard box.

So does this pad match up to the Stayfree pad?

YES! It does! If you’re a fan of the Stayfree pad, you will really like the Playtex pads.

They both have cotton soft like covers with quick absorption, comfortable dry wear, and are super thin – perfect for sport wear.

It makes me question if they are made by the same manufacturer and then just packaged differently by the companies. The only difference I can point out is that the Playtex ones come in more typical sizing whereas the Stayfree ones come in a wider variety of sizes from mini size to overnight pads with a wider bum.

There are also creases in the pad to help it flex with your body’s natural curves and I found that this really helped with preventing leaks. It didn’t create folds or pockets that caused leaks – something that I experience with other pads.

Regular Playtex Sport pads measure 23.5cm by 10.3 – 8.5cm and are 0.1cm thin.

U By Kotex Cleanwear Pads with 3D Capture Core & Xpress DRI Review

U-By-Kotex-Xpress-DRI
Take better care with a pad that’s seriously flexible. U by Kotex® CleanWear® Pads feature new 3D Capture Core® with the Xpress DRI* cover for crazy fast absorption to help stop leaks. Designed to move with your body, secure fit wings help prevent bunching and scrunching.

Review

I’ve reviewed the U By Kotex CleanWear pads with 3D Capture Core before and U By Kotex just released a newer version of this pad with a new cover called Xpress DRI.

I noticed a slight improvement in absorbency with the new Xpress DRI cover. (I didn’t notice any improvement when the 3D Capture Core was introduced.) Absorption was a little bit faster but if I were to quantify it, it is really only a 0.5 point improvement. When I change my pad – there is as much absorbed on top as there is on the bottom which is a good indicator that my period is being pulled away from my body.

However, the new pad still has the same cover – soft and plastic like but traps moisture and sweat when it gets warm. I wore this on a normal day and it still made me chafe a bit :(. I had to switch over to tampons for a bit to let my skin breathe and heal.

Regular:
When wrapped, it measures 11cm by 12cm and is 0.7cm thin.
When unwrapped, it measures 28cm by 7cm – 9cm and is 0.2cm thin.

Heavy:
When wrapped, it measures 11cm by 12cm and is 0.7cm thin.
When unwrapped, it measures 28cm by 7cm – 9cm and is 0.2cm thin.

Overnight: This one is pretty big but you will be surprised at just how thin it is!
When wrapped, it measures 11cm by 12cm and is 0.7cm thin.
When unwrapped, it measures 28cm by 7cm – 9cm and is 0.2cm thin.
