Yes, that is MOLD ON A TAMPON. Danielle from Parr For The Course opened her new box of Kotex tampons and found mold growing on her tampon.
I'm not sure what prompted her to actually check because usually I would just tug the string and check the tip and pop it right in! Maybe it smelled or maybe she saw some on the tip? Whatever the case, she contacted Kotex and here is their reply:
"We understand how distressing it can be to find mold on a product
that is used for personal hygiene and apologize for your concern. In
instances where it has been found, we conducted tests on the product
involved and have found the mold to be a common environmental species
that carries no health risk."I love how they just nonchalantly address the mold because clearly they don't understand. They issued coupons as a compensation for her trouble.
I know right.. coupons? Soon after her post took off and garnered thousands of views, Kimberly Clark took notice and contacted Danielle again:
"I just read your message to us on Facebook and I wanted to tell you that we are so sorry you had this experience! In Betty’s eagerness to get back to your e-mail right away, she unfortunately sent you incorrect information concerning this issue.
Nothing is more important to us than consumer safety. Any discoloration or abnormality with our tampons is extremely rare, and we want to do a full investigation to determine the source and follow-up with our manufacturing facility. So if you still have the tampon, can you please return it to us by using the prepaid mailing envelope we’re sending you?"
I'm glad Kimberly Clark is taking an incident like this seriously and isn't dismissing it like they initially did.
In November of 2011, the FDA issued a recall for Kotex Natural Balance Tampons (Security Unscented Regular Absorbency) due to bacterial contamination that could cause vaginal infections, urinary tract infections and other diseases. Her box could have been part of the recalled SKUs so I am interested to see what they find.

Will you be checking your tampons from now on?

Lol I was wondering when you'd post about this. I don't use tampons unless something goes wrong with my cup(and I will be checking them from now on) but this really surprised me, it's really makes you aware of what is actually going on with personal hygiene products(or things that we have yet to find out about). You can never be too sure with what they sell us(be it pads, tampons, cups, etc).
ReplyDeleteYeah it really makes me inspect all my tampons now!
Deletexoxo.
My mom uses those and no wonder why she stopped using them for some time.... I am NEVER going to use them! ;(
ReplyDelete:( Sorry to hear. I hope you find a new favourite brand!
DeleteIn one word: YES.
ReplyDeleteI'll never be able to unsee that moldy tampon now. I'm glad that I use Tampax, since I've heard some pretty negative things from people that used the brand, and I say "used" in past tense.

The tampon they ended up looking at was so shoddily made that it's ridiculous. As someone that waited a long time, and I mean a LONG time to really start using tampons, the "string tied around the tampon" thing would've just driven me away from them.
Kotex should absolutely be avoided as far as I'm concerned. Maybe some of their other stuff is good, but mold and a poorly made tampon found within months of each other? Someone's obviously not doing their job quality checking their product and are cutting corners. Tampax all the way for me.
O_O that last picture....
DeleteThanks for sharing this! I'm going to tweet it!!
